Mendota Fame - Kevin Barker

How many of you know that Mendota is the home of a Major League Baseball Player? Kevin Barker is the son of William ‘W.M.” and Anna Barker of Mendota.

Here’s what he looked like as a MLB player! He’s very handsome. For those of you who know W.M. and Anna, you may see the resemblance. He’s got Anna’s big smile.

But in 1993, when Kevin lived in Mendota, Virginia, after playing a few years for the John Battle Trojans, he began wearing a Bearcat jersey as a Virginia High senior. Here’s how he looked then:

Kevin’s high school baseball career transitioned into a college baseball career and then he joined Major League Baseball. Kevin went on to play for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds. Now retired, he co-hosts Blair and Barker on Sportsnet 590. On September 19, 2025, Kevin was inducted into the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to Kevin and his family!

Thank you to Elizabeth Stanley for suggesting we share this Mendota boy’s success story!
